Why do we chose to stay.....

Now that I stay home, I love to talk with my very special ex co-workers. It gives me a sense of accomplishment when I listen to their work complaints. In a weird way, it allows me to escape for a moment and think about their work issues and how I would have reacted if I was still there. Long story short, I get to live my working days through their conversations.

Lately, the conversations have been the same. "I hate working here", "Need to look for a new job", "Can't take this place anymore". These comments make me wonder why people choose to stay even though they are not happy. I mean if you don't like the job or the people around you, why not look for something new. Is it really a case of laziness. Are people really that lazy to update their resumes and venture out. Or is it fear..Fear of going somewhere new where things are worse than their previous project.

Being unhappy at work reminds me of being in a bad relationship. You want to leave, but fear being alone or leaving something that may not be bad after all. I guess we wonder if the grass is really greener on the other side.

As I am getting older, I have more respect for people who realize they are not happy and do whatever it takes to look elsewhere. Life is too short and 8 hours can be a very long time to stay in an environment where you are just not happy. Hopefully one day when I go back and enter the work force again, I can live by this and make sure I am in a happy place!

  1. Leaving would seem to be the best answer, but given today's economic woes, many will probably stay.

  2. I completely agree Susan, but I guess I was talking about a certain situation where you dont have to leave the company you work for, you just get on another contract. People are uncertain about the future especially when it comes to their jobs and its complications with the economy.

  3. Even if economy was not the problem, many people stay because it is familiar. We get used to complaining and that becomes our comfort zone. We feel that by complaining about issues of and at work, we are doing 'something' about the situation even though we are doing absolutely nothing to change it :)
Sometimes it is also feeling of insecurity. We may be reluctant to look for something else if we are paid decently at our current job and may not be confident enough that we'll get equal or better paying job elsewhere. Then of course there is family to consider etc etc. That's why I think if one has enough savings, they can take risks.
I quit my very VERY toxic job after 5 years to go back to school. Going back to school was the only way out, I thought. Never looked back and learned not to ever stay in a place for more than I need to if am not happy there.
